Athira Balachandran suffered from the fatal form of Hepatitis (Jaundice) and had to undergo immediate liver transplant on 1/15/2012 at Mata Amritanandamayi Hospital, Kochi. She continues to be in critical stage and will have to stay in ICU till third week of February. She is on ventilator right now. Her mother was the donor for the transplant. Mother suffered a heart attack soon after the transplant and had to undergo angioplasty. Mother is recovering and expected to be moved from ICU during the first week of February.

The total expense for Athira’s surgery and post treatments are estimated to be around Rs. 20 lakhs (appx $40,000). He mom’s treatments will cost close to Rs. 4 lakhs (appx $8,000). Athira’s treatment costs are after all the possible discounts the hospital and Mata Amritanandamayi Madam could provide. There is chance that her mother’s treatment costs may be absorbed by the hospital and Madam. Her friends and colleagues raised around 3 lakhs. The family’s savings along with loans from other sources, another 7 lakhs were found. Still, family needs to find another Rs. 10 lakhs. They turn to you for financial support as well as prayers.

Athira is 24 years of age and the only child. Her father is a painter and works for daily wages.
